Chicago Sunroom Addition

Chicago Illinois. In Progress.

TBS is Design Consultant for a small pavilion addition to an existing 1880’s Chicago Townhouse. The Owners acquired an adjacent lot in a dense north side neighborhood and required a means to access the planned garden from their existing house. A variety of design strategies were explored including window bays, decks and stairs to transition 7’ down to the garden. The solution arrived at is an attached sunroom cube, at an intermediate level between the existing elevated first floor and the garden at grade. The landscape shown is speculative and being designed by others. Exterior finish options being considered include zinc cladding (shown) versus fired clay shingles with patinated finish. Windows and doors are steel framed to achieve minimal sight lines and a conservatory like airiness. Design options were explored with hand drawings, Sketchup, Photoshop and Revit.
